Retainers

Once orthodontic treatment is completed, most patients will have the smile they have always wanted! In order to help the smile stay that way, a retainer is a key part of helping teeth stay in their new position. After teeth have been straightened, the ligaments and tissues won’t be settled in their new place right away and they are prone to shifting back to their original state. They will need some time to become more stable, which is why a retainer is needed.

The Importance Of Wearing A Retainer

A retainer helps hold the teeth in place until they become more secure. If a retainer is not used following orthodontic treatment, most likely the teeth will begin to shift out of place. Typically, retainers are worn consistently for at least a year following orthodontic treatment. Following full-time wear, a retainer can be worn just at night to help maintain teeth alignment. For children, a retainer is critical because their smile is constantly growing and shifting, so parents must be vigilant to ensure their child is constantly wearing it. A retainer helps keep their teeth aligned as they grow.

How To Wear A Retainer Properly

Our team will have a custom retainer made that fits over your teeth perfectly. The retainer will need to be worn for at least 20 hours a day for the first few months. Our doctors can give you a more specific timeline depending on their specific smile. A retainer may be a little uncomfortable for the first 4-5 days, but you should notice improvement after the first week. A retainer is removable and should be taken out for brushing, flossing and eating. We will provide you with more information for caring for your retainer after you have completed orthodontic treatment.
